The History of Grape Production in Kosaka

Grape production in Kosaka started in 1988 (Showa 63) in the Tokito area.
The volcanic soils there, deposited by an ancient eruption at Lake Towada, are well-draining and suited to grape production.
Vitis coignetiae (yama-budo) wild grape varieties were chosen for the plantings due to their cold and disease resistance. The vines were also own-rooted (as opposed to the usual practice of grafting) to gain more varietal character.

The V. coignetiae varieties were the life’s work of the late Haruo Sawanobori (1916-2001, aged 85), who spent nearly 50 years developing improved hybrids. The outstanding qualities of these Japanese wine grapes are their rich color and acidity.

Crafting wines fitting the unique qualities of our grapes

Shokoshi (Early-Mid September)

Believed to be a hybrid of Himalayan Vitis coignetiae (yama bud?) wild grape, though its exact parentage is unclear. A unique red wine grape, carefully selected for its qualities from a number of V. coignetiae hybrids.

Wine Grand (Mid-Late October)

A hybrid of Hokkaido V. coignetiae (Nakajima no.1), Moscow V. amurensis, and a Seibel grape. Well-suited to Kosaka’s climate and volcanic soils, this flagship variety produces soft and refreshing red and rose wines.

Iwakiyama Budo (Late October)

A hybrid of wild V. coignetiae from Mt. Iwaki and Fredonia (an American variety). This grape has an outstanding fruity grape aroma and rich color.

Yama-Sauvignon (Late October)

A red wine grape hybrid of V. coignetiae and Cabernet Sauvignon. Possessing a balance of acidity from the V. coignetiae and tannins from the Cabernet, it also sports a deep purple color and high sugar content. Outstanding acidity and sweetness, with a deep and rich aroma.

Uncompromising Japanese Wines

What is “Japanese Wine”?

Only wines made in Japan with 100% Japanese-grown grapes can be labeled as “Japanese wine”. Meeting these conditions also allows labeling with the region, variety, and vintage.

In Kosaka we have developed our vineyards using Japanese-original Vitis coignetiae (yama bud?) wild wine grape varieties. We create a number of products utilizing V. coignetiae’s unique acidity and rich color, ranging from refreshing wines and wines with depth, to sweet wines for easy drinking. We have also added blended wines to our lineup, and continue to strive for originality in our products.
